Playing in front of an audience..

Posted by Gillenium - November 14th, 2007

Well, yesterday was a little weird. It was the first time I have ever played my music in front of a large group of people! For my Hindu Mysticism class, each student had to make a creative project. The professor said "make whatever you want" so I did a remix of an Indian song using the beta version of Hazard as the spine.

As the bassy thump of Hazard filled the room and the professor said "Turn it up!," I couldn't help but feel a little proud. Afterwards, one guy made sure to get my attention to say "Dude... that was awesome!" I'd definitely like to play live in front of a real audience someday.

Believe it or not, I've actually already created a 15-minute set for opening. The tracklist of the set is 1. Hazard, 2. Why Birds Sleep Well (Part 4) and 3. Pangea. I remixed all of the tracks to sound better live and I packed it full of trigger-able samples and funky LFO fx I can handle with my midi controller live. Unfortunately, I don't trust my current laptop with live play. When I do have enough money to get a new laptop, I'm definitely going to be strongly considering opening for a local band.

Gillenium live.... I never thought I'd ever get to do something like that, but it's becoming more and more apparent to me that I can! It wasn't really until last year when I realized I wanted to play live. After the Prodigy concert, I went "I WANT TO DO THAT!" and subsequently fainted from exhaustion. I'm kidding, but I did take a cab home that night.

But anyway, here's what I'm up to at the moment - STILL working on collab with Kevin Johnson. I'm not rushing it though. It'll be done when it's ready, whether that's by this Christmas or Christmas of next year, haha. I have some crazy ideas about future songs... You remember my Christmas song for last year? A lot of people said it was too quirky, but this year, I'm going to try another Christmas song that's.... well, for the lack of a better word, insane. It's called A Mothman Christmas Carol right now, and it's based on a local mythic creature called the Mothman and how he might celebrate Christmas.(you may remember the movie Mothman Prophecies... yeah, same mothman). So the song is going to be half christmas cheer and half consuming terror. I can't wait!!

Also, I'm working on maybe starting another series (like Connection or Why Birds Sleep Well). This series would be like the soundtrack to a made-up videogame (examples - a song for the "fire" stage or a song for the "overworld"). A lot of fans have been commenting that my songs are like a mental journey, so I think I want to make an ultra-intentional mental journey for fans of videogame music. Sound good?

P.S. Have you heard November Butterfly yet???? November is slipping away!.... I mean, it'll still be here after November, but don't you want to hear it in context??

"Make whatever you want," quite a wide theme, isn't it? :P

But grats on playing your stuff in front of an audience- I'm sure you could play live somewhere, cause your music sure as hell has potential

Good luck with music, life and stuff- me want new song from ya soon

I love open-minded hippy professors. It's almost impossible not to get A's in their classes.
