Truely engaging

I'm getting a solid Metroid Prime feel from this one. And I LOVE the music in the Prime series. A little slow for my taste though. I don't mean the tempo is too slow, I actually think it's perfect, but every part of the song goes at the same slow pace.. hard to explain in a review, I think. I like for at least one element to break free of the mold. I'm being super-picky here, though, this is great stuff. This could've been expanded into a long long piece given the elements in place. The melody is slow, but still has a nice solid back for carrying a song 6 maybe 7 minutes. Perhaps an extended mix in the future?

I've found that the best band to draw inspiration from when attempting a longer song is Underworld. They taught me how to maintain a song for a considerable length.

MAKE MORE MUSIC

DjUntold responds:

Thank you very much for the review!!
i see what you mean about the slow pace of the tune, its kind of a background music type of thing, but ya i'm probably gonna go back and look over this song, revise it, maybe write some new stuff so its not too slow.
and i'm thinking its going to be extended, as you've suggested =D

and i will make more music =D!!

excellent

Beautiful soundtrack fare here. If I heard this in an adventure videogame, it would fit right in.

Ok, you want criticism... With an epic-sounding song like this, the parts that really make the song will be background parts (of which there are none here). You need some background instruments punctuating what the two big instruments here are saying. Also, you need some fx here somewhere. Some good reverb will give you that epic feel you want for a game. The fx depends largely on what type of game you'll be making. If the Great Ship Legasus is an actual sea-faring ship, you might want to stay away from the 'techy' fx. But, if this ship is in outter space, you should definitely add some Delay fx. Hope this helps. Keep it up.

EpicMastermind responds:

Awesome review, most helpful! Thankyou for your critism, it will help greatly on the journey to complete this piece! Btw, the atmosphere is set in outerspace; I think it would be fun though to create a remake of "The Great Ship Legasus" with an ocean environment.

Modern hip-hop??

You need to learn your genres :) Good stuff, though. Way better than my first FL Studio stuff! Of course, I never read any tutorials or anything. I got so frustrated with FL once in the beginning, I quit making music for about a year, haha. To this day, I still haven't read a tutorial... but I digress. Nice burbly synth used with this one. This is the kind of thing one would expect to explode into an orgy of drums and fx, though. I would revisit something like this once you have a good idea of how to drop some kickass beats (and with DJ in front of your name, you better get on that one quick!) I wanna hear more fo sure.

DjUntold responds:

Thanks XD
Well, i know this song kind of puts down the title of "Dj" behind my name, but trust me, i do know how to lay down the dnb beatz, its just i don't want to go overboard when im just learning how to use the program. Im still kind of uncomforable with the layout and such, but i'll get better with practice, like with everything else practice makes perfect.
but thanks for pointing it out, im definitley going to finish this song up, probably add some of the good stuffz and be on my way to my next piece, which, im hoping will be classical.
i love classical music :3

The fairy fountain in Zelda!

That's what it reminded me of! Beautiful synths and melodies. If you want advice as to what to add to this, I think you could go one of two different ways here. The song's tempo is pretty energetic. Everything in the song, however, hints that it will stay an atmospheric ambient tune. If you keep the energetic tempo, I would consider adding some energetic synths and maybe (maaaaaybe) even percussion. Plucked strings perhaps (agh, Zelda fountain again!). But, if you want to keep this a strictly ambient affair, I'd slow everything down and make the transitions phase more slowly. I think it'd be great either way, really. It's up to your personal preference. Keep it up! This stuff rocks!

DjUntold responds:

Well first off all, im glad you stopped by to review my songs, :D
and ya, i agree with you i could definitley add some energetic synths, maybe popcorn kinda thing, ehh i dunno, we'll see, i kinda make music as i go.
and i agree with you about the precussion, i think i should probably come in after the first part of the song, mmm, ya definitley.
i'm getting good ideas as i respond to this haha XD.

anyway thanks again!

If I could marry this track legally...

Ah surely would! I normally couldn't give a crap about downtempo, but this kept me engaged from start to finish. It has personality out the yen-yang! Rock on.

GILL!

Haven't heard anything from you in a while - how are things going? Coming out with a new album anytime soon? Drop me a line if you do!

hmmmmm, well..

It's pretty good. The melody is very interesting, but I'm not sure if the execution was as good as it could have been. It's bombastic, yet repeditive. It comes off sounding like a novelty song. I'm not sure if this was what you were going for, so take that for what it's worth. On a side note, the sample from Young Frankenstein could get you kicked from the site. NG doesn't allow samples of copyrighted works. You might want to resubmit this without the sample (although that would make the title more mysterious, wouldn't it?). Up to you. I would recommend a reworking of the track anyway, with more peaks and valleys, downtime, and a satisfying ending. This would make a kickass hiphop tune, too, I think, if you feel like rapping :) Keep it up!

jnzfab responds:

What I had trouble with was the pizz and the guitar. The song was great without it. I felt it without it it wouldn't have the umph. So I kept it in. After an hour a waiting I didn't give a crap what it sounded like.
I tried throwing in a chorus and rushed it, and wasn't too different.

Any ideas on what instruments I can use instead of a guitar and a pizzy (and any other sounds or whatever)

ooh, that's hot

I like this a lot. There's only a couple things that are out of place, like the trance synth. If you have a trance synth, you better burst into trance! But I loved everything happening in the background for sure. Way too short. Keep it up!

SolusLunes responds:

Feh. Trance + Ambience... TRAMBIENCE?!

Mmmyes. Thank you for the review though :D

Love your work.

nooooooooice

When I first heard this, I was like "Is Kevin using synths??" then I quickly realized you were and shed a single tear. Part of that story is true.

But yeah, good synth use. The bloom of the audio gets a little excessive in the later part of the song. By that, I mean, you kinda blow out the speakers a little. Nothing that a little compression and volume control can't fix, though. Very solid song. Very very solid. Anybody who complains that it's repeditive is stupid. Keep it up! I can tell you're settling into a style.

SensoryDecay responds:

Thanks steven, can't wait to see what you did with the collab song man.

Hellz Yeah

The Ambient section has been in need of more tracks like this. True chill ambience, instead of all the light-hearted trash that some NG artists try to pass off as ambient music. The heart of this one is the subtle guitar play in the middle of the song. It's pretty damn magical. Definitely your most focused track to date. It would benefit from the incorporation of another instrument though (or wacky sound fx!)

SensoryDecay responds:

thanks again Gill, you support me once again!
